  SYNOPSIS
After buying my Spider III 75 as part of a mid-life crisis (it was cheaper than a motorbike), I thought... "This is a top piece of kit, pity the Pilot's Guide doesn't give more technical information about the settings, or indeed catalogue the built-in presets. Maybe I'll compile my own this weekend." That was in November '07, I measured the final preset in March '08, at least now I can get on with my crisis and learn to actually play the guitar.
If nothing else, I hope this catalogue will speed others through to the fun part of their own personal crises.

This is a casual attempt to catalogue the 403 preset values which can be selected on the Spider III Combo 75 and above, comprised of 246 Artists + 156 Songs + 1 phantom preset, 05C . It is likely to contain many minor errors  and probably a couple of big ones for good measure.

  READING THE PRESETS TABLES
SpiderLogo4.bmp
The Bank name and Preset name are given as shown on the display of the amp.
SpiderLogo4.bmp
The Amp model is represented by it's friendly name , followed by a single digit and a colour letter. eg  "Twin Twang 2G" indicating the 2nd amp model with a green LED setting.
SpiderLogo4.bmp
The values for Drive/Treble/Mid/Bass/Ch Vol/Reverb are in the range 00-99, they can be considered to be a %age of the total range, pretty easy to interpret since the controls are marked in 11 radial  positions which can be taken as 00 to 10.  A table value of "50" would be 5.0, top dead centre.
These values were derived using the "Comparison" feature of the amp, and are probably accurate to +/- 2%, however values at the top end  (90 - 99) have less definition, and may be less accurate.

SpiderLogo4.bmp
The values for the Phase and Delay FX are given as a combination of single letter and a single digit 1-9, where 1 represents the lowest setting of an effect and 9 the highest. So, "C5 S1" would be Chorus set to its mid value, and Sweep echo set to its lowest value.
A Phase value of "P9" should be set carefully, since it is likely to represent the undocumented "uni-vibe" effect at the very limit of the Phaser FX.
Some of these values are greyed out, this indicates an FX value that IS stored in the preset, but IS NOT switched on when the preset is selected. Those values are used when switched on via the FX footswitches on the FBV or FBV shortboard . Obviously the values can be dialled in manually for those of us not lucky enough to own the FBV shortboard.

The values for Tap are simply beats per minute. This is the most difficult field to measure accurately, and is likely to be the most erroneous. Generally I timed 30 beats to derive bpm. Interestingly this value is rarely mentioned when people post their favourite settings, yet it has a noticeable influence on the Delay FX.
SpiderLogo4.bmp
The  values for OD / Gate are simply D and/or G (and maybe a W),
D indicates that the Overdrive is enabled (via Tap + Drive).
G indicates that the noise Gate is enabled (via Tap + Reverb).
W indicates that any FBV footswitches would default to Wah rather than Volume.

  ARTIST PRESETS
Nothing out of the ordinary, simply the preset values for the various Artist presets.
These are ordered alphabetically into 3 different contiguous bank lists:
1. Albert Lee - Julien K: Cleaner presets
2. Ash - Volto: Midgainy presets
3. The Accident Experiment - Thursday: Heavily overdriven presets

  SONG PRESETS
Listed adjacent to the banks of Song presets are the full names of associated Songs and Artists. In some instances these are indesputable, but in many there are more than one possibility. eg the preset "00S:BETTERLIFE" could refer to "Better Life" by either "Keith Urban" or by "3 Doors Down"; preset "90S:FAITHHOPELOVE" could refer to "Faith Hope Love" by either "Starsailor"  or by "King's X".
Note:   Ambiguous entries will be highlighted and will only list the most popular opinion, but should (depending upon your browser) display further information via a link or by simply hovering over the cell. Please email me with any information that supports a definitive answer to remove the ambiguity, or with any information that shows other presets to be ambiguous or catalogued incorrectly.

  USER PRESETS
The first 36 presets are made up from 9 banks of 4 presets that can be overwritten by us, the end users. By default they are preloaded with a mix of the Artist or Song presets that are stored in the other banks, so feel free to overwrite them with impunity since you still have them elsewhere and a "Power-On +A" will always reload them with factory default values again anyway.
The lower section of the User presets table lists those presets favoured by various forum users. Most of these have been harvested from posts in the Spider forum, but you can contribute to the list, submit your own to…
  presets@Gav1n.co.uk
Note:   1. User preset  "05C" is named "BRINGITBACK", this doesn't appear anywhere else in the Artist / Song preset lists and cannot be selected other than in user bank 05. This "phantom" preset takes the total to 403.
2. User presets "04C" and "08B" both refer to the "RIFTED" artist preset in the "V_H" bank.

  FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
Note:   1. I shall try to make the web page more user friendly, with options to filter and print based on selection criteria. (Need to learn a bit first though).
2. I may include similar info for Spider II or Spider Jam (would this be useful ?)

Any other ideas, please email me, (and be sure to let me know where in the world you are from :-)

Best wishes
